March 3.—We arrived again to-day at Nelsons house at Point Hope,having been gone eight days oil the back track. As I had laid out ourjourney to Point Barrow, we had gone now about three-fourths of thedistance. So far we had been successful and it remained to preparewell for this last quarter of the journey, for it was to be the hardestof all, as well as the most lonety. After leaving Point Hope therewere no villages until Point Belcher was reached, 300 miles away, andwe must depend upon what we carried with us for both men and dogs.Again, there were the people at Point Barrow to consider and the objectof our mission. There were ample stores at Point Hope that could bespared for 100 men, and our orders contemplated sending some of theshipwrecked men here.

REVENUE CUTTER BE 69 If the provisions at Point Barrow ran out in May, as we had beeninformed by Arey would probably be the case, it, would never do tokeep 300 men there until August with plenty of stores at Point Hope.Looking at it from this point and from this end of the route, I decidedthat upon arriving at Point Barrow I would send 100 men dow n fromthere to Point Hope, and that I would leave Lieutenant Bertholf atthe latter place to take care of them as they came down. They wouldhave to travel a distance of about -400 miles and it would be a severejourney, as it must all be made on foot, and provisions carried ordragged on sleds the whole distance. With a view to relieving themat this end and reducing the amount of provisions to be carried fromPoint Barrow, Lieutenant Bertholf was instructed to transport andplace about 500 pounds of flour, tea, bread, etc., at the mouth of thePitmegea River, nearly 100 miles up the
