Mr. Stevenson was a delegate to the NationalDemocratic Convention in 1892, and chairmanof the Illinois delegation. He was an earnestadvocate of Mr. Clevelands nomination, and castthe forty-eight votes of Illinois for him. WhenMr. Cleveland was finally nominated, after anexciting all-night session, the convention took arecess. Upon reassembling, the remaining busi-ness was the selection of a candidate for the Vice-Presidency. By unanimous vote of the Illinoisdelegation, Mr. Stevensons name was proposed.This, seconded by New York, secured his nomi-nation over three distinguished competitors onthe first ballot. How well the duties of presiding officer of theSenate were discharged by Mr. Stevenson, is amatter of history. In only two instances wereappeals taken from his decisions, in both of whichhis rulings were sustained by the Senate. Uponhis retirement.
