His son (3)Charles succeeded to the title, and held high office on the Par-liamentary side in the civil war; but wasactive in the recall of Charles II., andwas rewarded, Sept. 6, 1660, by the titleof Earl of Montrath, while his younger brother, Richard, having been active inthe cause, was on the same day raised to the peerage as Baron Coote, of Coloo-ney, Co. Sligo, Ireland. Richard hadpreviously married Mary, second daugh-ter of Sir George St. George, Bart ofCarricksdrumruske, Co. Leitrim, bywhom he had four sons, the second andeldest surviving, Richard inheriting thetitle, July 10, 1683. - This escutcheon was hung in thechurch.
