elected by the people of the wholecolony; the latter by the towns. The twobodies acted together in meetings of theassembly, but the assistants claimed th^exclusive privilege of meeting and exercisinga separate negative upon the proceedings ofthe court. This claim was energeticallydenied by the deputies, who were sustainedby the body of the people; while themagistrates and the ministers upheld thepretensions of the assistants. In 1644 the matter was compromised bythe division of the general court into twobranches, each of which was given a negativeupon the proceedings of the other. Allparties were agreed, however, in the work ofconnecting the religion and the governmentof the colony so closely that they shouldmutually sustain each other against theattacks of the Church of England. While these measures were in course ofadjustment other matters were engaging theattention of the colony. This gaveoffence to many persons, and in January,1634, complaints were made against Williamsbecause of a paper he had written while atPlymouth, denying that the king had anypower to grant lands in America to his sub-jects, since the lands were the property ofthe Indians. In this Williams was wrong, asthe settlers in New England had been care-ful to obtain the consent of the natives totheir occupation of the lands they had pos-sessed. He made a proper explanation ofhis paper, when he understood the truestate of the case, and consented that itshould be burned. Williams will not Retract.
