miles from Santa Bar-bara and four miles from Anacapa, and the chan-nel between the islands abounds in fish. Santa Cruz Island is densely wooded com-pared to the rest of the group; owing to the densefogs, the hills are wxll covered. Trees have beenbrought from Italy by property-owners, andthere are groves of eucalyptus, pines, and firs,and many fine oaks. On Santa Cruz, as well ason Santa Rosa, there are many luxuriant growthsof ferns. A visit should certainly be made to the cavesw^ith which Santa Cruz abounds, among themthe famous Painted Cave. This cave, more re-markable even than the grotto of Capri, is reallybeneath the mountains. Passing through theGothic arch at the entrance, the name is wellunderstood, as the salts have dyed it in a fantas-tic manner, in brilliant yellows, soft browns, reds,greens, and white. The first room opening fromthe sea is about sixty feet high, the walls beauti-fully colored. From this lead other caves, someof which are unexplored. The cave known as 264

One entrance opens on thelittle bay, the other on a sandy canyon leading upinto the mountains Almost everyvvhere on the islands have beenfound relics of the primitive inhabitants, and noone can look upon the really beautiful objectswhich have been discovered, beads, weapons,carved cups and musical instruments, withoutcrediting these extinct races with imagination,and as having been exponents of the principlethat beauty is an essential to happy life. In explorations made during the summer of1916 by Professor Outhwaite, anthropoligist ofthe University of California, he found over 1,000mounds. One near Prisoners Harbor is ISO feetwide, 300 feet long, and some 18 feet in depth.He intimates that at least one thousand personslived on the island from the evidence found inthe mounds.
