Narrative of the Baroness Reidesel the spot himself, and he would not suffer his own people to be wit-nesses to the sad spectacle.* Every possible courtesy was shown tothe officers, and when the act of surrender was accomplished, themost friendly intercourse commenced between Generals Gates andBurgoyne.f The surrender of Burgoyne was the most important event of theyear ; indeed it was one of the most important events of the wholewar. There were surrendered five thousand seven hundred andninety men, of all ranks ; which number, added to the killed, wound-ed, and prisoners, lost by the army during the preceding part of thecampaign, made altogether upwards of ten thousand men. Therewere also surrendered to the captors, thirty-five brass field-pieces,nearly five thousand muskets, and an immense quantity of othermunitions of war.
