Credit / Mention de source : Library and Archives Canada, C-120630 / Bibliothèque et Archives Canada, C-120630 Description / Descriptions : Born in England to artistic parents, Louie Burrell studied miniature painting at the Herkomer Art School at Bushey, winning awards and exhibiting at the Royal Academy from 1901 to 1904. She married another artist named William Luker in 1904, but her husband's death four years later left her to support herself and baby by painting portraits. In 1912, she moved to Ottawa and later to Victoria where a newspaper article notes she painted this miniature of "the handsome little son of Mr. and Mrs. Crawley Ricardo." In 1919, she returned to England from Los Angeles and continued to paint celebrities and royalty. Although an internationally-renowned miniaturist, she struggled financially all her life, only being awarded at the age of eighty, an annual grant by The Artists General Benevolent Institution. This miniature was acquired from the daughter of the artist in 1983. / Née en Angleterre de parents artistes, Louie Burrell étudia l'art de la miniature à la Herkomer Art School de Bushey, gagnant des prix et exposant à la Royal Academy de 1901 à 1904. Elle épousa un autre artiste nommé William Luker en 1904. Le décès de son mari quatre ans plus tard l'obligea à peindre des portraits pour subvenir ellemême à ses besoins et à ceux de son bébé. En 1912, elle déménagea à Ottawa, puis par la suite à Victoria, où un article de journal indique qu'elle avait peint cette miniature du “beau petit garçon de M. et Mme Crawley Ricardo". En 1919, elle quitta Los Angeles pour l'Angleterre et continua à peindre des célébrités et des personnages royaux. Malgré sa grande renommée internationale comme miniaturiste, elle fut pauvre toute sa vie, ne commençant qu'à l'âge de quatrevingts ans à recevoir une subvention annuelle de l'Artists General Benevolent Institution. Cette miniature a été acquise de la fille de l'artiste en 1983. |
