ndow of the apse, is asingle figure under a canopy which bears a moststriking resemblance to the series of the Prophetsat Fairford (Plate L.). In the figure, in the scrollhe holds, in the canopy, in the treatment of thedrapery, and even in the queer drawing of the hands,the resemblance is so close that I for one cannotdoubt their common authorship. Now it is onrecord that the windows of Henry VII.s ChapelBarnard Were glazcd by one Barnard Flower, the kingsglazier, who also is the glazier named in thefirst contract for the windows in Kings CollegeChapel at Cambridge, but who died in 1525-26before they were finished. A comparison of thosewindows at Cambridge which are believed to behis work, especially that over the north door,with the Fairford windows, reveals many points ofresemblance, and, allowing for the twenty yearswhich probably separate the execution of the two PLAIE L THE PROPHETS JOEL, ZEPHANIAH, AMOS, AND HOSEA,FROM THE NORTH AISLE OF THE NAVE, FAIRFORD Late Fifteenth Century

MALVERN AND FAIRFORD 261 works, I think we should not be far wrong inassigning to Flower the whole of the north aisle atFairford, and perhaps the Latin Fathers in thesouth aisle. Whether the west windows are hiswork too I do not feel sure, and to the names ofthe other artists who took part in the work we haveno clue. Yet though one may thus trace various hands The generalin the work, the windows form a connected whole, ^^ ^^^the planning of which must have been the work ofone mind. The arrangement is the traditional onewhereby the whole church forms an exposition ofthe foundations of the Christian faith. Thewindows of the nave contain single figures, theProphets on the north side (Plate L.) facing theApostles on the south. Each Apostle holds a verseof the creed, and the Prophet opposite him acorresponding verse from his writings. The fourEvangelists face the four Latin Fathers.
