Stamp of Romania; 1971; commemorative stamp of the issue "Frescos from the Northern Moldovan monasteries"; The stamp motive shows a painting of "At the corpse of St. John"; Meant is the Saint John the Baptist, a Christian matyr, which lived 7 BC - 32 AD as comrade of Jesus.; The main church of the monastery of Voronet (Romanian: "Mănăstirea Voroneț ", located in the region Bukowina, district of Suceava, in Northern Romania), is his "Church of the Beheading of Saint John the Baptist" and was founded in 1488 (built in the time с 26 мая 1488 по 16 сентября 1488 (Gregorian calendar)), however the frescos are created in 1546 by a painter called "Marcu" after paragon of a Michelangelo in combination with Byzantine traditions in the style of the Late Gothic.; The depicted picture is from the Western façade of this church and is part of the fresco "The last judgement". The monastery was founded during the rule of a Stefan the Great (1433-1504, called "Stefan, the Young", Romanian: "Stefan cel Mare".; Stefan the Great created this monastery in remembering to his victory over the Osmanes in the Battle of Vaslui in 1475. Saint John the Baptist was also called as "The New Martyr of Suceava" and is one of the Patron Saints of this town.; The to him sacrified day is the 2nd June of an each year, a special day in the calendar of the Orthodox church.; In 1785 was come Habsburgian troups from the Austrian Empire and conquered this monastery.; The monastery was closed, the momks were forced to leave it and the ceils were exposed to decay so that the entire former monstery-complex was any time later only still ruins.; Firstly, in combination with the process of the "Great Unification" in Austria-Hungary, that's meaning at the begin of the 20th century, was it permitted to the Orthodox church to re-activate again this monastery as such.; The monastery was declared as "Holy place" and to a "historical monument".; The number of visitors from the country and from abroad was immens increasing continuously during this time.; During the Communist period, the real identity of the place passed under a cone of shadow: people visited “the historical and the art monument of Voronet”.; Given the exquisite artistic value, this monument, considered as a "Museum of architecture and painting of the time of Stephen the Great", and it was not allowed to be used in other purposes.; Gradually, the candles and the sermons were totally forbidden in the Church.; Nevertheless were made there some restoration works, so for instance an enlarging of the roof’s eave in order to protect the exterior painting and some works for the removal of moisture that threatened some frescoes, for the consolidation of some wall parts that were on way of deterioration, for the repair and the consolidation of the floor.; In 1991, after 206 years, took place firsty again a Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church in the "Voroneţ Monastery" and an Orthodox nun with name Irina Pantescu was choiced to the first "Abbess of Voroneţ Monastery".; This monstery is belonging actually with to the UNESCO World Culture Heritage.; stamp postmarked by CTO Stamp: Michel: No. 2995; Yvert & Tellier: No. 2670; Scott: No. 2304 Stamp size (printed area of a single stamp without signature (year) line): 38.0 x 49.5 mm |
