It seems strange to think that ahnost a cen-tury has passed since the little girl was bornwho grew up to write Uncle Toms Cabin. Just eighty-seven years have passed since thecurly-haired girl Harriet Beecher, was born intothe large family of the Reverend Lyman Beecher,then a poor preacher living in the town of Little-field, Connecticut. The girls mother had a sweet,gentle spirit which was never forgotten by thechildren, although she died while they wereall young. Harriet remembered her mothers great lovefor flowers, and especially one thing that hap-pened. Her brother in New York had sent thelittle girls mother some fine tulip bulbs, whichwere very precious in those days, especially toone who loved flowers as Mrs. Beecher did.Little Harriet found them hidden away in thenursery, and thinking that they were onions,she persuaded her brothers and sisters that theywere good to eat.
