s that according to these records the first session of courtin this region was held in a log cabin belonging to CharlesRobertson122 near Jonesboro, Washington District.123 Thiscourt levied and collected taxes, regulated the civic life of thecommunity and punished evil-doers in no uncertain terms.The tax dodger was made an example of. Note the follow-ing, which is a copy from the original act passed in Jones-boro, August 8, 1779: Be it ordered that the Sheriff collect from William Moore four-fold, his taxable property being appraised by the best informationthat John Woods, Jacob Brown and Jonathan Tipton, assessors, couldkey per gallon, two pounds. Of course, the above sum was to be paid in Continental money,which was considerably below par in the year 1799.
