emore rapidly moving air current over a slow one or of a wavecurrent crossing a motionless portion of the air. The so-called mackerel sky is the result of two currents coming atright angles. A great cumulus thunderhead towering up onthe horizon like a huge iceberg, is often higher than the highestAlps would be if they were piled on top of the Himalayas.It is not unusual for these clouds to measure five, six, or eveneight miles from their flat dark base, hovering a mile or soabove the world, to their rounded glistening.summit, splendidin the sunlight. Through such a varying altitude there must bea series of belts of rainy mists, frozen snow, and ice particles.There is often more than one series of these belts of mist, snowand ice in the same cloud. It is the constant change in the clouds, their mysteriousgrowth out of nothing on one side, and their equally constantreturn into the sky around them on the other, that makes themso fascinating to watch. The part played by .the clouds in the distribution of ourwater supply, their effect on temperature and chmate, theirvalue as prophets of approaching storm and sunshine, all thesepractical uses are of so daily and usual a quality that we barelynotice their working except when their results interfere withour business or pleasure; in fact city folks probably only lookto the clouds for advice whether to carry umbrellas or not. Their marvelous beauty and infinite variety in sunset andsunrise, in midday and moonlight; which makes the clouds themost important feature of our sky effects, is brought home tous when we try to imagine what our world would be if, like themoon, our atmosphere had no moisture and a huge blazing sunin a never-changing, hard, fierce sky, were our only idea ofday.
