On14 March 1814, he ordered John Wood to beshot for insubordination and assaulting an of-ficer, the first of the military severities after-ward brought up against Jackson during hisPresidential campaigns. On 31 May 1814 hewas appointed major-general of the UnitedStates army, commanding the department of theSouth. In November, without orders fromWashington he marched against the English atPensacola, easily stormed the town and com-pelled their withdrawal. Proceeding to NewOrleans he began energetic preparations for itsdefense, amid the greatest difficulties and whollylacking in proper means and materials. On 23,28 Dec. 1814 and I Jan. 1815 he gained minorsuccesses against the British. On 8 Jan. 1815,General Pakenham with 10,000 veteran troopsdelivered a grand assault upon Jacksons works.The result was a complete defeat and rout of theBritish, they losing over 2,600 in killed, woundedand prisoners, while Jacksons loss was sevenkilled and six wounded.
