HAVING made an end of preaching to his people,Moses revealed to them his own approachingdeath. Then he went through the sad duty ofchoosing and proclaiming a successor. That successor,divinely pointed out to Moses, was his own right handman, his personal attendant Joshua, the victor in Israelsfirst battle in the wilderness, the companion on MountSinai, the faithful spy, who, alone with Caleb, was to beadmitted to the promised land. Joshua knelt before Moses, and was solemnly blessedby him in presence of all the people. After this impressiveceremony was over, God Himself summoned Joshua toenter into the tabernacle side by side with Moses. Withinthe sanctuary the Divine Voice spake to Joshua, badehim lead the people across the Jordan, and promised toaid and encourage the new leader with His presence. 11-94

HAVING thus prepared each possible detail for thefuture of his people, Moses looked back over allthe forty years that had passed, and his deepemotion burst forth in a great song, a death chant; for heknew his end was near. This marvelous song is full ofpraise of God. Its theme is always I will publish thename of the Lord. It describes His power and Hisblessings upon Israel, and the vengeances He had taken. To me belongeth vengeance and recompense; their footshall slide in due time: for the day of their calamity is athand, and the things that shall come upon them makehaste. Then the song closes in a great outcry of joy at Hisstrength and, last of all, His mercy. Rejoice, O yenations, with his people: for he will avenge the blood ofhis servants, and will render vengeance to his adversari
