Not more thantwo years of the famine had passed; and, in the fivestill to come, the Israelites could not possibly survivein Palestine. Therefore Joseph wished the entirehousehold, his father, his brothers and their sons,seventy souls in all, beside their wives and ser-vants, to establish themselves in Egypt. Judah brought him word of his fathers coming;and Joseph hastened in his chariot to the very borderof Egypt to welcome Jacob. Happy indeed must thatmeeting have been. The artist Schopin representsJoseph as being accompanied by his own household.He had been wedded in Egypt to Asenath, the daugh-ter of the high priest; and by her he had two youngsons. These advance joyously behind him as herushes to embrace his father. The many wanderingsof Jacob were at an end; he had found a permanenthome at last.
