^ Maidstone Companies, R.A.M.C. (Vols.) 65 was known the Boers were assembled in force. Thenext day Hartebeestfontein Poort was attacked, the Boersoffering a stubborn resistance. They were forced todecamp, however, leaving behind large quantities ofstock and grain. The British casualties were twentykilled and thirty-nine wounded. The column arrived atKlerksdorp two days later, having captured 15,000 smallstock and 5,000 cattle. The total killed and wounded inthis expedition numbered eighty-nine. At this pointCorporal Norris was taken ill and left the column. Afew days later the column patrolled up the SchoonspruitValley in the direction of Ventersdorp, capturing anumber of prisoners, and for the next four months wasoccupied in clearing the Western Transvaal, rounding upstock and capturing small parties of Boers.
