ns carriage stopped at the Mayorsresidence, three mighty cheers were given and the crowd scatteredmiscellaneoush for dinner. The Douglas procession moved down the Peru road to BuffaloRock, where they met the pro-slavery champion, whom they escortedto the Geiger House. The procession was about half as long as thatwhich waited on Mr. Lincoln, and the enthusiasm was almost whollyconfined to the Irish Catholics. At one oclock, the crowd commenced pouring into the publicsquare. The rush was literally tremendous. The speaking stand hadbeen foolishly left ungarded, and was so crowded with people, beforethe officers of the day arrived, that half an hour was consumed in abattle to make room for the speakers and reporters. Even then theaccomodations were of the most wretched character. Two or threetimes the surge of people on the platform nearly drove the reportersoff, and half a dozen clowns on the roof broke through some of theboards and let them down of the heads of the Reception Committees.

THE OTTAWA DEBATE 135 The whole number of persons present could not have been less thantwelve thousand. Large numbers were present from Chicago, Galena,Springfield, Peoria, Quincy, Rock Island, Bloomington, Alton andother distant towns. The crowd was considerably larger on theground than that which assembled in this city on the night of Douglasopening speech. MR. Douglass speech At half pa.st two, Mr. Douglas took the front of the platform, amidthe cheers of the Hibernians, who had fought their way to the front,and said: MR. LINXOLNs reply Mr. Lincoln then came forward and was greeted with loud andprotracted cheers from fully two-thirds of the audience. This wasadmitted by the Douglas men on the platform. It was some minutesbefore he could make himself heard, even by those on the stand. Atlast he said: When Lincoln had concluded his masterly and crushing indictmentand conviction, amidst the applause of thousands of voices, Douglassprang to his feet to reply.
