oration in thetransverse colon; in case 215 at the junction of the transverse and descending colon. Incase 561 there were two perforations in the descending colon. In case 253 it is merelyrecorded that there was a perforation in the colon. In case 436 it is stated that there weremore than twenty perforations in the colon. In case 243 the record states that the ileum,as well as the large intestine, was ulcerated, and that several of the ulcers had perforated,without mentioning whether this accident occurred in the large intestine or the small. Incase 382 a perforation in the csecum communicated through an abscess-cavity in the iliacregion with a perforation in the ileum just above the ileo-csscal valve. In some of thesecases it is recorded that evidences of peritonitis, with or without faecal extravasation, wereobserved; in others the record is silent as to this point. SECT. iv.; MORBID ANATOMY. 455 the rents made by unskilful dissectors in removing the colon, when its walls arc greatlyweakened by ulceration or sloughing, have sometimes been mistaken for perforations whennone actually existed. Evidences of more or less extensive and severe peritoneal inflammation were observed,besides, in a number of instances in which no perforation existed, as, for example, in cases238, 437, 811 and 816. In cases 221, 358 and 867 the intestines were agglutinated bygeneral peritoneal adhesions. In case 784 the adhesions were limited to the ascending, incase 613 to the descending, colon. In several cases, also, local peritoneal adhesions wereobserved which, in some of them, possibly resulted from former local peritonitis unconnectedwith the dysenteric attack.
