The Emperor Isaac Angelos turned at oncewath an army against Nemanya, whom he defeated,1191. The Serb ruler was forced to sue for peaceand had to relinquish his new conquests. Howeverbitter these losses were, the Serb State under Nemanyahad grown to such strength and stability that Byzanceno longer dreamed of imposing her suzerainty as acondition of peace, and the sovereignty of the ServianState was left unimpaired. The new friendship be-tween Byzance and Rashka was further confirmedby the betrothal of Nemanyas second son Stephanto Eudokia, niece of the Emperor Isaac Angelos. Abdicating the throne, he set his eldestson Voiikan as administrator over Zeta, and to hissecond son Stephan he left the throne of Rashka. When he announced his abdication to the NationalAssembly, on March 25, 1196, it was opposed withmuch earnest pleading, but his resolution was fixedand not to be shaken by the prayers of the assemblednobles and representatives. Nemanya entered monastic orders under the nameof Simeon, his wife at the same time becoming a nununder the name of Anastasia. He first retired tothe monastery of Studenitza (founded by himself),and at a later time joined his son Sava at MountAthos. There, at the Servian monastery of Hilendar,built by himself and Sava, Nemanya died in the armsof his son in 1199.
