CHARLES DANA GIBSON drawing of a characteristic society womanwhich has become known as the Gibson Girl.He was born in Roxbury, Mass., studied atthe Art StudentsLeague, NewYork, under SaintGaudens and Ju-lian in Paris, andlater went toLondon and Mu-nich for furtherwork. He firstachieved promi-nence by his illus-trations in Life,the Century,Scribners andHarpers maga-zines. He is ac-knowledged as one of the greatest living mas-ters of black and white, and is perhaps bestknown through his humorous, inoffensive ridi-cule of the shams of society. At one stage inhis career Colliers Weekly secured exclusivecontrol of his services for a year at a salaryof $100,000. Some of his published works areThe Education oj Mr. Pipp, A Widow andHer Friends, and People oj Dickens. In 1905he discontinued illustrating for a time and at-tempted by study in Europe to master colorwork, but he has since returned to his formerfield of endeavor.
