A small force in the edge of thewoods on the west side of the old field openedfire upon the V. The Federals changed theirformation, and advancing in line of battle,brushed away their assailants and plungedinto the woods, when heavy firing began andlasted possibly half an hour. I suppose that the Federal force which Isaw was the division of General Sturgis, andthat he left behind Harlands brigade of Rod-mans division to guard his flank in his ad-vance, since Harland reports
