When a patient is seen at her home, sick in bed, the methods of explorationemployed are usually abdominal, vaginal, vagino-abdominal and, in some cases,recto-abdominal. A patient who is too sick to come to the office for a pelvicexamination, is usually suffering, not with a superficial disturbance that can beseen by inspection of the external genitals or through a speculum, but with somedeep-seated trouble, the nature of which can be determined only by deep internalpalpation. In such a case, the abdominal examination is first made. The patient is di-rected to move to the edge of the bed and the clothing is loosened and pushed upand down, to expose the abdomen, and the knees are drawn up to relax the ab-dominal muscles (Fig. 112). The abdomen is then examined by the various me-thods previously explained.
