Lantern Pagoda. the new year there is often erected on the bridges alantern pagoda, with fifty lanterns, in honour of thegods of riches, fire, and agriculture, and also to givelight to the neighbourhood ; considering light as anemblem of temporal prosperity. These seven-cornered Popes, Priests, and Temples. 381 frames of bamboo are drawn up, after the lanterns arelighted, by a rope and pulley like a sail on the mast ofa boat.
