A friend has sent me the following information concerningAbdul Baha, and the remarkable religious cause \nth which he isassociated, which I am glad to be able to share with my readers: The Bahai movement arose in Persia in 1844, and nownumbers many millions of adherents, the bulk of whom live inPersia and the Middle East. Whilst the majority of the Bahaisare drawn from the Moslem world, this cause can claim discipleswithin the ranks of all the world religions. Bahaism, working for world-wide spiritual and socialreconstruction irrespective of caste and creed, was an outcome ofBabism, which took its name from a Persian youth, Mirza AliMohammed, knovMi to his followers as The Bab ( Gateway ). Many European historians, including Professor E. BrouTieof Cambridge, have described the wonderful charm of this pure-hearted seer and teacher of progressive religion. Bahaollah, after a period of imprisonment in chains, was,with his family and immediate followers, driven into exile byreactionary leaders in Persia, and after great hardship and manywanderings he and his family were imprisoned in 1868 in thebarracks at Acca. From prison Bahaollah continued to spreadhis gospel of universal love throughout Western Asia, and themovement which he led continued to grow by leaps and bounds,despite the martyrdom and persecution of Bahais in Persia andelsewhere.
