the weight of thecentral tower, not a high one, has caused its piers to sinkso much that the aisle arches joined to it are crushed in acurious manner. The choir, a fine and peculiar one, dates from the last halfof the fourteenth century, but was injured and restored a fewyears after its completion, and the central tower above the roofwas then rebuilt. All parts, however, had to bear a heavyshare of mutilation in the age of cold blood at the middle ofthe eighteenth century, when misguided zeal, though of a fash-ion different from that which wrecked the nave, did no smalldamage to the ancient work. Between 1853 and 1857 exten-sive restorations were made under the direction of Mr. EwanChristian, that give due effect to the design, in which the wallsand windows of the aisles are Early English, and portions ofthe arcade are early, and the other parts late, Decorated. But the feature of thegreatest beauty, — one that has perhaps no rival elsewhere, —is the immense east window, shown in the plate annexed. It is,says Rickman, one of the finest, if not the finest, Decoratedwindow in the kingdom, and is of nearly the same date asthe superb west window in York Minster (1291-1380), addsMr. Billings. Mr. King thinks it is later (1363-1395). While,however, the fourteenth century design is shown, the actualfabric is new, for the stone-work is a recent and careful repro-duction. The upper part, says Mr. Fergusson, exhibits themost beautiful design for window tracery in the world, whichis filled with glass dating from the reign of Richard IT., andrepresenting the Resurrection, the Last Judgment, and theNew Jerusalem.
