Chicago,Rock Island and Pacific Railroad passes through its southernpart. The climate is as good as is to be found in the United States.The altitude ranging from 4,000 to 8,000 feet, giving the air alightness that is especially beneficial in pulmonary troubles.The nights are always cool and the summer heat is moderatedby the altitude as well as the cool breezes from the mountains,while the cold in winter is tempered by the constant sunshineand protection which the mountains afford from high winds.The county seat is Clayton, situated in the northeastern part on the Colorado and SouthernRailway. Here the federal land office for the northeasternpart of New Mexico is situated. The town has a populationof 800. It has electric lights and water works, a telephonesystem, a very good public school system and a fine publicschool building, Methodist, Baptist and Christian churchesmany business establishments, a ;20,000 court house, andcontains nice homes. Two weekly newspapers, one in Enghsh,the Clayton Enterprise, and the other in Spanish, El Fenix,are published here. There is a national bank here. Of lateyears the town has attracted many healthseekers. Coaldeposits are being w^orked in a small way near Clayton. Folsom is the second largest town, having a population of 750. It issituated on the Colorado and Southern Railway and is gainingfame as a health resort. It is 6,400 feet above sea level andis located in a beautiful valley. The Sierra Grande, twelvemiles distant, rises to an altitude of 11,500 feet. During thesummer months this mountain is one mass of flow^ers, and isa magnificent sight. Sierra CapuUn, five miles from the town,is 9,500 feet high and is an extinct volcano with a perfectcrater. The view from Capulin is grand.
