Thetide was unfavorable, so that the Drake worked outbut slowly. This obliged me to run down severaltimes, and to lay with courses up, and main-topsailto the mast. At lens^th the Drake weathered thepoint, and having led her out to about mid-channel,I suffered her to come within hail.

AT WHITEHAVEN. 93 The Drake hoisted English colors, and at thesame instant the American stars were displayed onboard the Ranger. I expected that preface had beennow at the end, but the enemy soon after hailed, de-manding what ship it was ? I directed the masterto answer, The American Continental ship Eanger ;that we waited for them, and desired that theywould come on ; the sun was now little more thanan hour from setting, it was therefore time to begin.The Drake being astern of the Eanger, I orderedthe helm up, and gave her the first broadside. Theaction was warm, close, and obstinate. It lasted anhour and four minutes, when the enemy called forquarters; her fore and main-topsail yards beingboth cut away, and down on the cap ; the top-gallantyard and mizzengaff both hanging up and downalong the mast; the second ensign w^hich they hadhoisted shot J^V/^ay, and hanging on the quartergallery in the water; the jib shot away, and hang-ing in the water ; her sails and rigging entirely cutto
