From height above height,robed in fir and cedar, poured down the elixir of life, filling lungs to theirdepth, and hurrying the reddening pulse, till the re-created wanderers fromthe lowlands walked as upon air, and spirit heard the recall to youth,strength, and hopeful endeavor. The novelists testimony to the delicious-ness of Mackinac air suggests further comment at this point. Of theatmosphere of Mackinac it is not surprising to any one who inhales it, inthe sunshine at least, and with a sense of the freedom the region and itsenvironments afford the tourist, that Horace Mann should have said: Inever breathed such an air before. I think this must be some which cameclear out of Eden and did not get cursed. THE FAIRY ISLE OF MACKINAC 33 should be hasty if he can avoid it. It were well, perhaps, in the first placeto take a little steamboat voyage of ten miles around it, which can beachieved in an hour for a small fee, and repeat it thereafter at pleasure.This external observation is full of interest, varied and exciting, affordingviews of the wonderful cliffs standing out into bold, grotesque, and oftenfantastic forms, but which cannot be seen in their reality only frominterior inspection. The visitor will notice particularly, if only from itsquaint name, The Devils Kitchen, which from the boat seems but asmoke-begrimed cavern in the base of a rugged cliff, but which can beinspected with romantic interest from the plateau on the cliff-edge—the lookout (at least so reputed) of the wily Pontiac.
