s For-sythes landing. It is situated in a delightful valley imme-diately on the banks of the Yellowstone river, and is sur-rounded by trees and immense bluffs rising abruptly on thesouth and west. Forsythe is the end of a freight train divis-ion> and the supply point for the settlers of the Rosebud bot-tom, on the south side, and the Big and Little Porcupinerivers on the north side of the Yellowstone. Big Horn (832 miles from St. Paul, at the mouth ofthe Big Horn river) is the diverging point for a countrywell adapted to stock-raising. The valley of the Big Hornis fertile, and its enclosing hills are covered with excellentgrazing. The railroad crosses the turbulent waters of theBig Horn river about two miles from the mouth of thatstream, by a bridge 600 feet in length. Passing over thenarfow intervening valley, it presently penetrates the bluffswhich hem in the Yellowstone river, by means of a tunnel1,100 feet long, and emerges into the comparatively smallYellowstone valley beyond.

Seven Hundred Miles in Montana, 151 Custer (838 miles from St. Paul).—The station is on theCrow Indian reservation; the town is on the opposite sideof the Yellowstone, and is called Junction City. It has apopulation of about 200. Custer is the station for FortCuster, thirty miles distant, one of the largest militaryposts in the West, and situated near the scene of the Custermassacre. The large buildings at the station were erectedby the Quartermasters department for storing army sup-plies. A daily stage runs from the station to the fort. Pompeys Pillar (^(^i miles from St. Paul) is a mass ofyellow sandstone, rising abruptly to a height of 400 feet, itsbase covering nearly an acre of ground. About half wayup on the north side is an inscription, of which the follow-ing is a miniaturey^^-i/^//^
