OT PL 6 CO THE INADEQUATE REDOUBT AT JOHNSONVILLE WTien, most unexpectedly, the Confederate General Nathan B. Forrest appeared on the bank oppositeJohnsonville, Tennessee, November -I, 1864, and began firing across the Tennessee River, a distance ofabout four hundred yards, the fortifications of the post were cjuite inadequate. They consisted only of a re-doubt for six guns on the spur of the hill overlooking the town and depot (seenclearly in the distance above),and two advanced batteries and rifle-pits. Three gunboats were in the river. Their commander, afraid offalling into the hands of the enemy, ordered his gunboats set afire and abandoned. The ranking officerof the troops ashore followed his example and ordered all transports and barges destroyed in the same way.A terrible conflagration which consumed between one and two million dollars worth of Federal propertyensued. On the SOth of November the few remaining stores not burned or captured by Forrest havingbeen removed by railro
