-day. S. Alphege was brought out of prison topreach to them. He did so, and gave to the sicksome bread which he had blessed. After this,though still detained in prison, he was treatedhonourably. This calm, however, only precededanother storm. It arose as follows: the Danesnotified to the Archbishop that he might be set atliberty on the payment of fifty talents of silver, acondition being appended that he should persuadethe King to pay ;^ 10,000, as the price of peace. S.Alphege absolutely declined to listen to these con-ditions. What his reasons were we cannot say forcertain, but there is little or no doubt that hescrupled to give to these heathen Danes the treasuresof the Church for the sake of his own safety. Itwould be difificult to describe the fury of the Daneswhen they heard of his refusal. They resorted to everymeans in their power to force him into compliance.Among other rigours resorted to, his cell was filledwith noisome smoke. It happened about this time (it was Saturday in

Large stores of wine had lately beenbrought into the camp, and in course of the feast theDanes drank freely. When they were well drunkenthey ordered the Archbishop to be brought into thehall. Fetched out of prison, a piteous spectacle, hepassed through the streets of the town on horsebackto the Danish hustings. On his entrance into thehall of feasting, he was greeted with loud shouts,Gold! Bishop!
