The United States—Texas and Oregon 1621 President Tyler and Secretary Calhoun determined to secure the annexa-tion of the new republic. They prepared a secret treaty with its gallantleaders, and only when every detail was arranged did they present the treaty tothe United States Senate. That body, influenced partly by resentment at be-ing neglected, partly by Northern sentiment against the extension of slave ter-ritory, and partly by Mexican threats of war, rejected the annexation. TheTexas question became the main issue of the next presidential campaign.
