1X-G4 The United States—The Solid South 1663 national character, is the quietude with which the result was accepted. All thethreats of violence died away, and the country. North and South, acquiescedcalmly in the decision of the tribunal it had selected. With the Hayes-Tilden struggle, the reconstruction period may be consid-ered closed. The next year (1877) President Hayes withdrew the last Northerntroops from Louisiana and South Carolina; but the action by which his allieshad secured his election in the South had destroyed all chance of further suc-cess for the Republican party in that region. The Southern States were fullyrestored to their Constitutional powers, they were under white domination, andthey were Democratic through and through, the Solid South.
