The gay young men of thecity, watching him pass thus, made jests at him that theywould not have ventured upon in his hearing. Caracalla wastold of this, and in his anger he sent his soldiers forth throughthe streets of Alexandria bidding them slay everyone they met.For six days the ravage continued until the terrified citizensdared no longer venture forth.
