The new era of achievement andthe conquest of time and space had begun. On the twenty-fifth of October, 1825, Szechenyi, theapostle of Hungarian emancipation, in a speech before theDiet, sprang into leadership as the advocate of a newHungary, independent of Austrian control; and, on thetwenty-sixth of the following December, Russian revolu-tionists in the square of the Senate made a bold but inef-fectual stand against their despotic autocrat ; but, whenthey shouted for the Constitution they demanded, thesoldiers, whom they thought to overawe by their demon-stration, hurrahed too, thinking, however, that this newword, Constitution, was a cheer for the wife of the crownprince, Constantine. So unknown a term was Constitu-tonal Freedom in despotic Russia in 1825. 116
