TAKING POSSESSION OF LOUISIANATERRITORY TAKING POSSESSION OF LOUISIANATERRITORY BY THURE DE THULSTRUP On the 20th of December, 1803, Louisiana was turnedover to the American commissioners, General Wilkinsonand Governor Claiborne. The commissioners had come toNew Orleans and encamped just outside the walls of thecity three days before, and sent a messenger asking for aconference in which they might arrange for the transfer.On the 20th, the Americans marched into the city, led by thecommissioners, and were received by Laussat. The Frenchcommander delivered to Claiborne the keys of the city. TheFrench flag descended from the staff in the square, and wasreplaced by the American flag. There was no very greatenthusiasm, because the people had nothing to do aboutmaking the change, and they did not know what it mightmean for them.

They were to cross the continent, trace theMissouri River to its source, and open negotiations with thevarious Indian tribes along their way. The Editor.) The party consisted of two officers and forty-three men.They sailed up the Missouri in three boats. The largestwas fi.fty-five feet long, drew three feet of water, hadten feet of deck in the stern, and a tenfoot forecastle. Itwas propelled by twenty-two oars, beside being pro-vided with a large square-sail, and it had movable sidesthat could be raised so as to protect the crew from thefire of an enemy. The other two boats, one of six andone of seven oars, were open. Beside the boats, theyhad two horses, designed to be led along the banks foroccasional use in exploring and hunting.
