Created Earl ofSandwich, 1660; fell in the great sea battle with the Dutch,off Southwold Bay, 1672. Head and shoulders portrait of a young man with long head,well chiseled features, pale complexion with just a tinge ofcolor, and quiet, dark eyes. He is turned a little to the right,lace almost full front and in a strong light which makes a short,pronounced shadow beside his prominent, sensitiye nose. Hisgarb is dark and he wears the long dark wig and deep, flowing,white lace collar of the period.

At the foot of the mound isa blasted tree, surrounded by groups of green and brown brush,and green and brown bushes border the pond, a patch of whosesurface is silvered by reflections from white clouds floating inbanks of gray in a light blue sky.
