Apart from thedirect bearings of the excavations conducted in various parts of Greece uponthe development of Greek art, the most important results of the work consistin the vast increase of material for Greek history, which is now beingrewritten on the basis of the many thousands of inscriptions that have beenfound in the great centres of ancient Greece. The result is a curious mixture of art and of equalljstrange syncretism in religious rites. It is one of the disappointments oischolars that we as yet know so little of the Phoenicians who played such animportant role in history.
