wonderful castle built for Wotan by the giants. Wolan and his wife are lying asleep on a flowery bank, but soon wake and see the castle which has been built while they slept. Wolan is overjoyed at the glorious sight, but the more practical Frieda reminds him of the price which he hadagreed to pay the giants for this godly dwell-ing ; this being the surrender of Freia, goddessof youth and beauty. Wotan tells her that henever intended to keep his agreement, the godLoge having promised to show him a way toevade payment. Freia now hastily enters, closely pursuedby the giants Fasolt and Fafner who call uponWotan to deliver the goddess to them as agreed.Wotan repudiates his promise, saying that itwas made only in jest.
