Thegiants now return for theirpay, and demand thatenough gold shall be piledaround Freia to hide hercompletely from sight. Thisis done, but when all thegold is piled up Fafner saysthere is still one small crev-ice visible, and insists that itbe filled with the Ring.Wotan refuses, and the giantsgoddess, rises and delivers her are about to seize Freia again,appeal to Wotan. Weiche, Wotan, weiche ! (Waver, Wotan) By Ernestine Schumann-Heink, Contralto (Wotans responses by Mr. Witherspoon) She warns him solemnly that the Ring iscursed and charges him to give it up.
