Loge, however, tells them of theRhinegold, saying that if this treasure could bestolen from Alberich by Wotan, it might beaccepted by the giants in place of Freia.Wotan refuses to entertain this plan and thegiants seize Freia and carry her off, declaringthat if the Rhinegold is not in their hands bynight the original bargain must stand, and Freiabe lost to the gods forever. Left alone, the gods realize the seriouspredicament they are in, especially as it is seenthat, deprived of their youth goddess, theyare suddenly aging. Wotan thereupon decidesto secure the Nibelungs gold, and goes withLoge in search of Alberich. A vapor arisesfrom the earth, concealing the stage, and whenit disappears the scene has changed.
