abama.At the early banquets in honor of the Father of ourCountry it was customary to have as many toasts asthere were states in the Union. At first thirteen toastswere responded to, and as new states were admitted therewere additional toasts. There is no reliable informationas to when this custom was abandoned, but no doubtthe rapid adding of states soon made it impossible. During the past quarter of a century Washington hastaken his proper place in history as a soldier and states-man. We love him as a man, and our celebration of thebirthday of the first and most illustrious of Americans isan event to be looked forward to, an event to inspire ourpatriotism. May it ever be remembered while Americanhearts beat! May it ever rekindle the fires of patrioticregard for the country which he loved and to which hedevoted his life! A TOAST.
