Pre-eminent among them is, of course, this immortal Oberon, with its wonderful instrumentalcoloring, breathing the very atmosphere of Elfland. The chief elements of the story of theopera are outlined in the overture. After an introduction, the horn of Oberon is heard, withthe tip-toeing of the fairies represented by the clarinets. The German poetWieland adopted the principal incidents ofthe story as the basis of his poem. The opening scene of the opera occurs inFairyland, where the fairies are dancingaround the sleeping Oberon, the Elfin-King.Oberon has quarreled with his fairy partner,Titania, who vows never to be reconciled toher King until he shall find two lovers con-stant to each other through trial and tempta-tion. The Kings tricksy spirit, Puck, hearsof the plight of Sir Huon of Bordeaux, a youngknight, who has killed the son of Charle-magne, and who is for this condemned totravel to Bagdad and slay the person who sitsat Harouns left hand, and claim Harounsdaughter, Rezia, as his wife.
