As a coincidence that was at the time considered sin-gular, the superstition in regard to the matter of thirteenat table was recalled when Whittier dined for the lasttime with his friends. During the summer he had lodgedat the house of Miss Gove, taking his meals with othersof his party in a house adjoining. Hisniece noticed tiiere were twelve seated, and without com-ment took her plate to a small table in a corner of theroom. When her uncle came in, he said in a cheery way, Why, Lizzie, what has thee been doing, that they putthee in the corner ? Some evasive reply was made, butprobably Mr. Whittier guessed the reason, for he waswell versed in such superstitions, and sometimes laugh-ingly heeded them. CHAMBER IN WHICH WHITTIER DIED his summer vacation, came in unexpectedly, and took thethirteenth seat that had just been vacated. Whittiersgrandnephew, to again break the omen, took his plateover to the table in the corner with his mother. It wasall done in a playful way, but the matter was recalledwhile we were at breakfast next morning. The news thencame of the paralysis which had affected Mr. Whittierwhile dressing to join us.
