ОписаниеWinter villages of the Mandans near Missouri River during the winter 1833-1834 (approx).png
Reuben Gold Thwaites): ”Travels in the Interior of North America, 1832-1834.” Part II. Early Western Travels 1748–1846. Volume XXIII. Cleveland, 1906. Side 324
English: The map shows (approx.) the winter villages at Upper Missouri River, North Dakota, during the winter 1833-1834. The map is from the 1890’s, but it shows the dense forests on the river banks, where the village Indians found shelter during the winter. The trading post Fort Clark in Mercer County is marked with a red square near the largest Mandan village, Fort Clark Village (32ME2). (Fort Clark Village is called Mih-Tutta-Hang-Kush by Maximilian zu Wied. It is also known as Mitutanka – spelled in many ways. Deapolis (32ME5) is the village called Ruhptare by the German prince in his writings about his journey.) Maximilian zu Wied visited the lower winter village on December 3, 1833, and he gives the location of the two winter villages shown on the map in: Maximilian, Prince of Wied (Ed. Reuben Gold Thwaites): ”Travels in the Interior of North America, 1832-1834.” Part II. Early Western Travels 1748–1846. Volume XXIII. Cleveland, 1906. Page 324
