The station is 2 miles from the airport, itself 12 miles from the city centre. The shuttle service has existed since the station was re-opened to passenger traffic in 2005. The shuttle is timed to arrive at the station to meet incoming trains from either direction. As a free service, it does not need to be registered and is thus not tied to a published schedule (although there is one), allowing it to wait if the train is delayed.

The shuttle was initially privately funded by the airport, operated for them by Veolia Transport Cymru (Thomas of Barry), using a vehicle provided by the airport. At least as of 2007, if not from the start, this was a 2005 Optare Solo (reg. YJ05 XNU, new to Shamrock of Pontypridd), wearing a green 'Rail Linc' livery, the branding used for several rail feeder services in South East Wales area (SEWTA).

Initially a direct shuttle, the Holiday Inn Express stop was only added after the airport made an application for financial support using some of the funds obtained by Vale of Glamorgan from the developer for local transport improvements. A trial by the airport had shown it would be used if added, but not sufficient without financial support.

In April 2010, the airport announced it intended to withdraw the service due to insufficient use, and the council provided interim funding into the autumn, with the same vehicle and with Veolia still as the operator. In November 2010 the council announced the service would continue from 1 December 2010 on the same frequency and still as a free service, operated under contract to the Vale of Glamorgan Council by New Adventure Travel, with financial support from the council and Welsh Assembly Government.
