ОписаниеGeology of the Richmond Basin 1899 Plate XLIV.jpg
English: Plate XLIV from The Geology of the Richmond Basin published by USGS, which has the following caption:
Outcrop of prismatic coke. North of Gayton.
The text of the report refers to the figure as follows:
Dike north of Gayton.—A quarter of a mile north of the Saunders shaft a natural exposure of the prismatic coke is seen. Its appearance is shown in Pl. XLIV. From this locality a dike may be traced north westward at intervals toward the middle of the basin.
Note: This is natural coke or coal that has been heated by the igneous intrusion such that its volatiles have been driven off, sometimes also called clinker. The joint pattern is columnar.
