Родился 17 сентября 1926 года в Шампейне, штат Иллинойс. Начинал как басист и играл с Дэнни Цейтлином и Джо Фарреллом. Брал частные уроки в Цинциннати. Самостоятельно научился играть на органе и фортепиано в середине 1950-х годов.

Возглавлял собственную группу в начале 1950-х; потом играл с Портером Килбертом, Эдди Чембли в Чикаго (1957), Уиллисом Джексоном (1957-58). Также играл с Джонни Гриффином, Максом Роучем в Чикаго в 1950-х. Владелец музыкального клуба предложил ему переключиться на орган. С 1959 года возглавил собственную группу с саксофонистом Гарольдом Виком и ударником Джо Дюксом. Гастролировал в США и Европе и записывался с такими музыкантами как Джо Гендерсон, Джордж Бенсон, Пэт Мартино.
