L'Enfant designed the city of Washington. He was originally buried at Green Hill, a friend's estate in Maryland. But in 1911, he was disinterred and buried with full honors overlooking the city he helped build.

The monument's Neoclassical design was chosen by the Commissioners of the District of Columbia. The white marble top is supported by six marble posts (each 1 foot, 8 inches in height). The base is 10 feet, 10 inches long by 6 feet, 11.5 inches wide. It is 11 inches deep, and set flush with the earth. The top slab acts as a canopy over a coffin-like lid, below which the body is interred. This lid is 8 feet, 4 inches long by 4 feet 4.5 inches wide and is 7 inches deep. On each corner of the lid is an oak leaf. On the lid itself is a 4-foot-long sword with flowers entwined about the hilt.

On the end facing Arlington House is a circle, 2 feet, 7 inches in diameter, which shows L'Enfant's design for the city of Washington. Below the circle is the inscription which describes the famous engineer.

On April 23, 1931, a bronze marker was placed on of the western base by the Daughters of the American Revolution. It describes his services in the American Revolution.

The tomb is infamous for getting two things wrong. L'Enfant was born in 1754, not 1755 as noted on the tomb. Second, he was not a major but only a captain. The errors were noted only after the tomb was dedicated, and were never corrected for fear of damaging the tomb.
